Youth-focused evaluation to promote positive sexual health development in culturally-specific programs

Session Abstract (150 words): 

People of color are at a disproportionately higher risk for unintended pregnancy and STIs compared to their White counterparts. Because culture and race play instrumental roles in sexual health development, Planned Parenthood North Central States (PPNCS) conducts culturally responsive programming. Youth-focused evaluation is needed to determine whether programming is effective for the populations PPNCS serves. Input from youth have consistently informed the development, adaptation, and implementation of pre- and post-intervention surveys.

Participants included youth in Hmong STAR (N=20), ¡Qué Onda! (N=41), and Youth Power (N=52) programs. Preliminary results show that participants in each program showed significant increases in measures of parent communication about sexual health, comfort talking about sexual health, and knowledge of sexual health resources, with variations among programs. Data will be reviewed over a two-year time period. PPNCS’ responses to youth feedback reflects youth-focused evaluation as their input helps ensure surveys more accurately measure program impact.
