Session Abstract (150 words):

Evaluations of youth outcomes and program quality are not new, but many youth program evaluations contain one or the other, not both.  Program quality evaluations tend to be process-oriented, qualitative, and grounded in research-based “best practices” for staff and program design.  Outcomes evaluations tend to focus on results of the program and uses quantitative approaches.  Given growing interest among funders and other youth program supporters in how programs foster specific outcomes, evaluators need tools for examining program quality and outcomes that are accessible and flexible.  In this skill-building session we will introduce two tools, the American Camp Association’s Youth Outcomes Battery and the Camp Program Assessment Tool. We will discuss strategies for using them together in a camp or youth program setting.  Participants will walk away with each of these tools and practical tips for training staff, collecting data, and using what you learn for program improvement and advocacy.
