Session Abstract (150 words):

The argument made in this presentation is that some of the procedures considered to be indispensable in development projects’ M&E are being put into question in Markey Systems Development (MSD) projects. The arguments will be theoretically sustained by various literature (such as Jenal, M., Liesner, M. (2017) and Ruffer, T., Wach, E. (2013)) that have pointed out to the limitations of establishing causal linkages in MSD projects due to the complexity the approach entails. It will also bring an ethical argument made on a blog post by Duncan Green (https://oxfamblogs.org/fp2p/) questioning about the use of the word “beneficiary” in development projects. To complement the author will narrate an experience of evaluating a project using the MSD approach aimed at strengthening the supply chain of treadle pumps for agricultural production, but ended up creating a completely new business in the communities.
