“Hold on, that’s it?” A six-step approach for transforming qualitative analysis into a community-engaged, transparent process

Session Abstract (150 words): 

Qualitative inquiry is informed by multidisciplinary academic traditions that use complex mental models and rigorous frameworks to generate theories and findings for evaluation use. However, the specific procedures in qualitative data analysis (QDA) can be steeped in academic jargon.

 

Opaque terms have left some evaluators with a sense of mystery and uncertainty around the actual QDA process. Publications cite the “constant comparative method” or “grounded theory approach” in their methods section but often fail to describe particular analytic steps. Evaluators need explicit and transparent explanations of analytic procedures to use QDA methods confidently with community-led and participatory projects.

 

This interactive workshop introduces a rigorous six-step approach to QDA used with diverse community members to co-create meaning from various types of qualitative data. Participants will experience the approach in small groups, building on each step and debriefing between activities. The process will demonstrate that community-led QDA strengthens evaluations and advances methodologies.
