Session Abstract (150 words):
This presentation will facilitate a discussion on the complicated task of developing and using surveys with youth. Designing surveys for youth requires knowledge in educational, developmental, and survey methodology literature, as the type of prompts and questions used on traditional surveys may not be appropriate for younger audiences whose cognition, language, and reading skills are still developing. Discussion facilitators will draw upon their personal experiences designing and administering surveys for youth in the educational and after-school context. Session attendees will engage as a group to brainstorm, problem solve, and tell stories about the methodological, psychological, and practical challenges of designing and using surveys with youth. Some of our talking points include pre and post measures, retrospective survey designs, cognitive interviews, and creative approaches to surveying and evaluating children.
