Session Abstract (150 words):
Evaluating the impact of programs on youth, especially youth from vulnerable and marginalized communities, can be challenging for numerous reasons. In our efforts to “leave no one behind”, we seek to gather feedback from youth so that their perspectives can inform the programs that are impacting them. However, challenges arise when students are constantly asked to participate in data collection, often by evaluators and researchers from backgrounds that are different from the youth they are engaging. This Birds of a Feather will promote discussion around ways our evaluation practices can move from something that happens “to” youth towards something that happens “with” youth while being respectful of their time and life experiences. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss questions including, “How can we include youth in our data collection efforts while minimizing burnout?” and “How can we collect data in a way that reflects youths’ experiences and avoids tokenism?”
