Session Abstract (150 words):

A positive youth development approach engages youth in all parts of life; for international development programs, where measurement can be extractive and burdensome, this includes engaging youth in measurement.  This session will provide a space for critical thinking and discussion around innovative approaches to engaging youth in measurement. We will prompt the audience with two examples from recent research.  IREX will present its use of participatory evaluation methods with youth in Iraq and Uganda, where youth were instrumental in designing research questions and instruments, conducting interviews, and analyzing data.  Social Impact will discuss a longitudinal study of youth in the West Bank and the methods used to keep youth engaged throughout the period of study. Following the presentations, we will facilitate small group discussions around the key barriers to engaging youth and measurement and solutions that can be applied by partners and evaluators in their own work.
