Session Abstract (150 words):

Social impact investment (SII) is a form of investment that seeks to have both a financial return and a positive social impact. These investments have gained popularity in the international development and civil society sectors, where complex situations involving power, politics, and culture are major considerations, and there is a history of ineffective or even harmful programs. This Birds of a Feather discussion will provide an opportunity to brainstorm methods that may be effective for evaluators to contribute culturally-appropriate, participatory, and transformative evaluation methods to the field of SII. Courtney Bolinson, an SII evaluator for Engineers Without Borders Canada and Donna Mertens, an expert in transformative evaluation, will facilitate the session. The discussion content will be presented to the Social Impact Measurement TIG as input into the TIG’s strategy and future direction. Additionally, the session will bring like-minded evaluators together to network and find thought-partnership in this area.
