Session Abstract (150 words):
Despite technological advances that have allowed researchers to develop innovative ways of collecting data, particularly from youth, it remains critical to explore ways of engaging youth in-person during data collection so they are given the opportunity to express their truth in ways that might resonate most with them (e.g., physical movement or drawing). In this session, we will demonstrate three activities we have used to collect qualitative data from youth (at least middle-school age) in lieu of traditional in-person or online one-on-one interviews, focus groups, or surveys. These activities allow evaluators to collect data they might normally get with standard qualitative methods, but focus on the youth as active participants rather than passive recipients of focus group or interview questions. Attendees in this demonstration will experience the activities as if they were participants themselves, will be given a range of adaptation ideas, and ideally, expand their qualitative data collection approaches.
