Session Abstract (150 words):
Engaging youth as evaluation partners not only provides critical contextual information to inform evaluations; it also contributes to evaluations that are more rigorous and accountable to the programs, initiatives, and communities we evaluate. Partnering with youth in evaluation, however, can be challenging. How can evaluators design a participatory approach that both recognizes and challenges how we partner with youth? How can we promote youth voice and power in the design, data collection, and reporting in a way that is authentic? This session demonstrates a curriculum Social Policy Research Associates developed to support youth participatory evaluation in our evaluation of 90 youth programs in Oakland, CA. This demonstration will highlight strategies that can help funders, nonprofit organizations, and other evaluators to address power dynamics and build agency among youth, so they feel empowered to share their knowledge and speak their “truth.”
