Session Abstract (150 words):

In an environment of shrinking foreign assistance budgets, both public and private donors are looking to development practitioners to quantify the returns on investment made in development efforts. While in some cases, quantifying returns on investments may be relatively simple, in other cases it proves challenging. How do you place a monetary value, for example, on social trust that is built in a community as a result of a development effort? How do you quantify the return on investment made in a young person through a scholarly exchange 20 years later? This birds of a feather gathering will discuss the challenges associated with conducting return on investment analyses for complex development activities, and will invite practitioners to share lessons learned and potential paths forward.
