Abstract 1 Title: Evaluation through digital storytelling: Exploring Most Significant Change among IDPs in North Eastern Nigeria.
Presentation Abstract 1: Evaluating the effectiveness, relevance and reach of humanitarian interventions can be challenging, especially when trying to uncover candid information about women and girls’ experiences of interventions in insecure or post-conflict settings. This case study focuses on an Oxfam project that utilized TEGA - a peer to peer digital interviewing methodology lead by girl researchers in an informal IDP settlement in North Eastern Nigeria. The approach combined survey questions targeting; gender based violence, sanitation, food security and livelihoods with ‘most significant change’ (MSC) questions. Traditionally, collecting stories of Most Significant Change requires skilled facilitators and significant time and resources. Using TEGA to deploy the MSC approach through a network of 14 ‘Technology Enabled Girl Ambassadors’ (TEGAs) piloted this method using a mobile device to collect women and girls’ stories of change. Join this session to understand how we combined MSC techniques with digital interviewing for the first time (we think!).
Abstract 2 Title: The Role of Whatsapp in linking Community Health Nurses for Improved Performance in Ghana
Presentation Abstract 2: Community Health Nurses (CHNs) are paid frontline health workers in Ghana that provide community-based preventive and curative health care via “doorstep services”. They face challenges of professional isolation and lack of support affecting their ability to work effectively. Through the Gates Foundation funded Care Community Hub project, 5 district and 12 sub-district closed WhatsApp groups were set up to connect all CHNs in five districts in Ghana. CHNs also formed other informal groups with their peers. This paper presents findings based on content analysis of data shared within the groups and its effect on CHNs motivation to perform better. Results indicate that WhatsApp facilitated the connection between CHNs and their supervisors, friends and family by acting as an efficient and inexpensive medium of communication. This easy and effective means of information sharing on professional and technical topics increased their credibility in the community, while also creating a sense of teamwork.
Abstract 3 Title: Going Digital in Evaluation: Affordances, Constraints, and Dilemmas in Social Media.
Presentation Abstract 3: Social media research is an emerging field and the data collection techniques, tools, and analytical approaches are evolving. The growing number of social media interventions in health promotion and across other disciplines are steadily increasing and reflect the strong online presence of diverse populations in this digital age (e.g. 68% of all Americans are on Facebook).  Collecting and analyzing data from social media sites has broad implications for the development of methods used to study Big Data and to evaluate programs that incorporate or that are delivered through social media. By providing examples from two projects using Facebook, this presentation will explore ways in which social media data can be collected and analyzed to measure various aspects within evaluation, such as experience and social support. This presentation will also explore the affordances, constraints, and ethical considerations in collecting data from social media.

For Evaluation 2017, international attendees and presenters who encounter complications due to the international travel environment will have up to 30 days after the event to request a refund and submit appropriate documentation. No administrative fee will apply for the international requests. The $50 fee will be waived for registrants who planned to travel into the US and experienced international travel issues.
