Session Abstract (150 words):

This skill-building workshop describes a multi-year process integrating understanding by design (UBD) into planning, implementation, and evaluation with three resident summer camps operated by one youth organization. The UBD process is client-centered, theory-driven, and utilization-focused strategy that fosters program and evaluation capacity in a wide range of community-based programs. Authentic assessment is featured as a tool to enhance program delivery, participant and staff development, consistent with UBD’s six facets of understanding (e.g., explanation, interpretation, application, perspective, empathy, self-knowledge). This approach proved remarkably consistent with both experiential learning practices and evaluation standards (e.g., propriety, feasibility, accuracy, utilization). The UBD implementation process underlines the significance of learning-to-action between an evaluator and program team(s) in developing a feasible, flexible, and sustainable evaluation plan that serves a wide range of stakeholders. Discussion will focus on “what works” from the perspectives of participants, programming, and evaluation, reflecting on both outcomes and process.
