Session Abstract (150 words):
This session explores ways actual camps and summer programs have shifted from “evaluation for accountability” to “evaluation for learning” to improve their programs and advocate to broad audiences. Using a case study approach, participants will identify ways summer program evaluators can foster a culture that supports sustainable systems of evaluation, learning, and action. Whether in the woods or in the city, for a single day or for multiple weeks, camp and summer experiences are fundamentally about learning. Youth and staff alike learn valuable skills such as personal and social skills that are critical in school and beyond. Evaluating these outcomes, however, is difficult because, unlike schools, camps and summer programs are dynamic, unpredictable places where evaluation can sometimes feel time-consuming and frightening. In this session, summer program and camp evaluators will discuss realistic ways to engage in evaluation and meaningful learning in this unique context.
