Session Abstract (150 words):

The National Democratic Institute (NDI) has supported democratic institutions and practices across the globe for more than three decades. NDI is rich in programmatic experience in election monitoring, political parties, democratic governance, citizen participation, and candidate debates.  However, like many large, far-flung organizations, innovations may happen in silos; promising practice may be captured but not disseminated; and lessons may remain on the pages of evaluations. To mitigate these risks, NDI began expanding institutional space for programmatic learning. Initiated by a 2015 donor requirement to complete cumulative assessments of over 38 past programs, NDI leveraged the evaluative exercise to harvest and disseminate insights across the institute.  Inspired by Open Space Technology and World Cafe methods for large group deliberations on complex issues, NDI piloted learning forums across regional and technical teams.  This panel shares NDI’s institutional experience, drawing upon participants representing Central and West Africa, Eurasia and NDI’s global elections network.
