Session Abstract (150 words):
This presentation will focus on practical and relational approaches to engaging hard-to-reach populations. Our discussion will be based on our study on violence against Asian women and children, including survivors of violence, women who do not speak English and for whom topics of sex and violence are taboo. Through a statewide random sample and a metro-convenience sample, a total of 425 Asian women completed surveys and 80 participated in qualitative interviews and focus groups. We will share how our team employed culturally and contextually sensitive methods to overcome barriers to connecting and communicating with our desired population. We established deep connections in the Asian community – built on high levels of trust and mutual benefit – collaborating with five ethnicity specific community based organizations, sharing knowledge and power in determining study priorities, developing trauma-informed data collection protocols and training for interpreters and translators with participant safety as the primary consideration.
