In 2015, the Systems in Evaluation Topical Interest Group (SETIG) conducted a survey, gathering information from more than 120 AEA members and colleagues about their use of systems and complexity theory-based concepts in their evaluation work. In this “Birds of a Feather” session, participants will hear the results of the survey and have an opportunity to discuss the implications for developing a core set of principles defining good systems in evaluation practice. At the start of the session, participants will learn about the systems and complexity concepts, methods, and tools that were most commonly reported in the survey. Then session attendees will participate in discussions about which elements are most fundamental to good systems thinking in evaluation. This discussion will inform the development of a core set of standards or principles that will be publicly vetted, finalized, and disseminated in 2017.
