Session Abstract:  As evaluators, we are constantly concerned with selecting methods that increase an evaluation’s practical utility to stakeholders. Process mapping is a diagramming method beloved by organizational development scholars and consultants for its relative simplistic and practical value. Process maps are not logic models; they show how program activities and outputs are operationalized. Applied to evaluation, process mapping techniques can facilitate more meaningful engagement with diverse groups of stakeholders around program operations, improve the quality of evaluation activities, and enhance the utility of evaluation findings. Process maps also provide evaluators with a stakeholder-driven set of criteria to use when evaluating program implementation fidelity and quality. This highly interactive workshop will have four parts: Part 1 (30 minutes): Introduction to applications of process mapping techniques for program design and redesign. Discussion of best practices for facilitating process mapping exercises. Part 2 (45 minutes): Short simulation of a process mapping exercise, identifying key techniques. Workshop participants play the role of program staff and stakeholders participating in the exercise. Part 3 (45 minutes): Role-play of leading a process mapping exercise. Workshop participants lead the exercise while workshop leaders provide direction and tips for overcoming facilitation and mapping hurdles. Part 4 (30 minutes): Debrief on challenges and opportunities that arose during process mapping simulation and roleplay. Discussion on how to incorporate process mapping techniques into workshop participants’ evaluation work.
