Session Abstract:

Global Forest Watch (GFW) is an interactive online forest monitoring and alert system designed to empower people everywhere with the information they need to better manage and conserve forest landscapes. GFW uses remote sensing technology and science to provide the timeliest and most precise information about the status of forest landscapes worldwide, including near-real-time alerts showing suspected locations of recent tree cover loss. Evaluators and M&E specialists will learn how key datasets can be used along with program data to monitor the intended and unintended effects of infrastructure, governance, and conservation interventions on intact forest landscapes. Participants will get an overview of key datasets, analytical features, locally relevant analyses, and crowdsourced stories that can be used to better understand the status of forests as well as various ways to interact with over 35 contextual datasets including logging, mining, palm oil concessions, protected areas and indigenous people areas in relation to their own primary research. Participants will learn about use cases like how governments and companies are using GFW fires platform to combat fires and haze in Indonesia.
