To fulfill evaluation accountability standard (E1) (Yarbrough, et al, 2011) we must document our evaluations. Documentation allows us to learn from our work, and it supports internal (E2) and external reviews (E3) of our evaluations. But what does this mean for practice? The act of writing down—documenting—is inherently a reflective activity. It helps us make visible thinking processes and can reinforce learning. Is there a way to use the activities necessary for appropriate documentation to build evaluation capacity among our stakeholders? To build our own evaluation capacity? Can documentation also serve to make transparent and justify investments in high quality evaluation practice? During this session, we will discuss these and similar questions; we will share documentation strategies and discuss ways to use the documentation process to build evaluation capacity.
